Secret Mannheim
How do you make navigating a new city interesting?
Using my hometown of Mannheim, Germany, I looked for 15 places that showcase the citys' character beyond your typical tourist attractions to design an app answering that question.
I was inspired by the concepts of geocaching and scavenger hunts to create a concept that would let you navigate to these places without really knowing where you are going. The journey should feel like an adventure, like you are discovering a new and interesting place without having read everything there is to know about it on the internet beforehand.
The 15 locations are seperated into five categories, corresponding to the five sensen: Seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, feeling. This way, you get to experience the city on a completely different level.
Beforehand, you can only choose which sense you would like to explore. There are vague descriptions for every location, but nothing more.
The navigation works with visual clues instead of a map. You are told where to go: "Turn right at the blue house and continue until you see a big oak tree." This is to further inspire a feeling of adventure and discovery.
Once you have arrived, you get a very short informational text before you can go and explore where you have turned up. You can also anonymously leave a review or a greeting for the the next finder.
The whole app is designed to be a fun and unusal way to explore a city, and finding interesting places you normally wouldn't.
